The Marriage Adrian Designed

Chapter 04 - The Marriage Adrian Designed
Elena met Adrian eleven months after Ethan’s funeral.
He approached her at a foundation conference in Boston and introduced himself as though they had never stood in the same cemetery.
He said grief had blurred that day.
Elena believed him.
Adrian understood mourning without appearing sentimental. He never told her to move on. He remembered Ethan’s birthday. He sent Grant a handwritten note on the anniversary of the drowning.
Kindness became his most effective disguise.
Their courtship moved slowly at first. Adrian brought coffee to her office, asked about Julia’s patents, and listened when Elena described the foundation’s work. He said he admired people who inherited responsibility instead of wealth.
After the wedding, his interest in the foundation became practical.
Which trustees trusted Elena?
Could the patents be licensed exclusively?
Did Julia’s trust allow spousal voting rights during incapacity?
Elena joked that he sounded like a hostile-acquisition attorney.
Adrian kissed her and said marriage was the friendliest merger.
She had mistaken warning for charm.
Three months before her birthday, Elena began noticing discrepancies in Veridian’s merger documents. Revenue credited to clinics that did not exist. Licensing payments routed through an address in Delaware. Customer deposits appearing as operating cash.
When she asked Adrian, he blamed aggressive accounting.
When she asked Lucas Reed, the chief financial officer, he became frightened.
Lucas later sent one message.
Do not discuss this at home. Ethan made that mistake.
The message vanished from Elena’s phone an hour later.
She told Grant only that something felt wrong. He asked her to wait and trust him.
She refused.
Elena copied the merger files onto a secure drive and scheduled a meeting with the foundation trustees for the morning after her birthday.
Adrian discovered the meeting.
The fake affair messages appeared that night.
His plan was elegant.
Discredit Elena morally.
Accuse her financially.
Use the scratches and her anger as evidence of instability.
Remove her from the foundation before she could present the accounting records.
The party guests had been chosen to spread the story.
Adrian did not simply want a divorce.
He wanted witnesses to the version of Elena he had created.
Detective Maya found the remote Adrian used during the presentation.
Its recent-file history included two versions of the slideshow.
One contained the forged messages.
The second contained a board resolution dated three weeks earlier.
Elena’s humiliation had been rehearsed.
Maya looked toward the dark screen.
“He did not lose his temper tonight.”
May you like
Elena touched the broken chain at her neck.
“No,” she said. “Only the pull was unscripted.”
