Charles Cole Returns

Chapter 14 - Charles Cole Returns

Charles Cole was arrested in a cabin outside Quebec City.

He had changed his hair, lost weight, and carried identification belonging to a dead accountant.

Canadian police found him because he used an old Veridian encryption key to access a hidden account.

The account contained twelve million dollars.

Charles offered to testify against Adrian in exchange for avoiding a murder charge.

Prosecutors refused.

During interrogation, Charles insisted Ethan’s death was accidental.

He admitted striking Ethan with the flashlight but claimed the blow was meant to stop an attack. He said Ethan fell against the bar and died from the impact.

“Why move the body?” Maya asked.

“Panic.”

“Why alter the autopsy?”

“Protection.”

“Why steal Julia Mercer’s code?”

“Business.”

Each answer separated the act from its consequence.

Charles had built a life from nouns that concealed verbs.

Maya showed him Ethan’s video.

His confidence weakened.

Then she displayed the original medical-examiner notes. Ethan’s skull injury was inconsistent with the marble edge alone. A second impact occurred while he was already down.

Serena had not seen that part.

The fallen phone did not capture it visually.

Charles looked toward his attorney.

Maya placed another photograph on the table.

The flashlight had been recovered from Evelyn’s bank box along with Ethan’s phone. Adrian gave it to his mother inside the sealed package.

Two separate blood patterns were present.

One matched the first strike.

The second indicated a downward blow.

Charles stopped talking.

Adrian’s defense blamed Charles entirely.

Adrian claimed he was horrified, coerced into moving the body, and controlled by his uncle from childhood.

Elena knew parts of that story might be true.

Charles recruited Adrian into fraud when he was twenty-three. He taught him to use fear, loyalty, and family shame.

But Adrian later used the same methods on others.

Being shaped by a dangerous person explained his tools.

It did not excuse how deliberately he used them.

Charles’s extradition gave prosecutors the final physical link.

The watch clasp contained a partial fingerprint.

Charles’s.

He had removed it from Ethan’s wrist after the killing and given it to Adrian as a warning.

Adrian kept it for five years.

Not from guilt.

As a trophy and insurance.

If Charles ever betrayed him, the watch could connect Charles to the body.

The men called each other family.

What they meant was mutual evidence.
