The Thirty-Third Candle

Chapter 20 - The Thirty-Third Candle

Elena celebrated her thirty-third birthday in Grant’s backyard.

Twelve people attended.

No board members.

No reporters.

No wall screen.

The cake leaned slightly because Grant decorated it himself. One side carried more frosting than the other. Maya brought wine. Ruth brought flowers. Lucas was in prison. Serena was in prison. Charles and Adrian would remain there for decades.

Their absence was not the theme of the evening.

Elena wore a simple dark-green dress.

No necklace.

Ethan’s watch rested inside the house in a glass case beside Julia’s letter. It was evidence, inheritance, and warning. Elena did not need to wear it to prove she remembered.

Before the candles were lit, Grant raised a glass.

Elena tensed automatically.

He noticed.

“No speech,” he said. “Only happy birthday.”

Everyone laughed.

The moment passed without a hidden presentation.

That ordinary safety moved Elena more than grand apologies had.

Later, Maya gave her a final evidence release form.

One item remained from Adrian’s penthouse safe: a sealed letter addressed to Elena.

Adrian wrote it before the birthday.

The letter explained that he planned to discredit her, secure the patent vote, and repair the marriage after the merger. He believed she would eventually understand that everything had been necessary to save Veridian.

At the bottom, he wrote:

When you forgive me, we will be stronger.

Elena read the sentence twice.

Adrian had considered forgiveness a future asset he already owned.

She placed the letter in the fireplace.

Grant watched but did not comment.

The paper curled into light.

Elena did not burn it to erase the evidence. The court had copies. She burned it because she no longer needed Adrian’s explanation occupying physical space in her life.

At midnight, the last guests left.

Grant carried dishes inside.

Elena stood beneath the backyard lights, thinking about the previous birthday: the teal dress, the scratches, the martini, the gold watch striking marble, and the police officer appearing against the city windows.

That night had felt like the destruction of her identity.

It had actually destroyed the identity Adrian designed for her.

The unfaithful wife.

The unstable heiress.

The naive daughter.

The woman who would forgive because he expected her to.

Elena lit one candle left on the table.

Thirty-three.

She made no wish.

May you like

Wishes belonged to futures handed over to chance.

She blew out the flame and walked into the house where nothing waited behind a locked screen.
