Julia’s Hidden Room

Chapter 08 - Julia’s Hidden Room
Julia Mercer left behind laboratories, patents, and a house Grant could not bring himself to sell.
She also left behind secrets.
The marble slab from the penthouse had been installed as a worktable in the basement of her country home. Grant had assumed she purchased it for experiments.
Maya obtained permission to examine it.
Beneath the underside, sealed inside a narrow drilled channel, technicians found a brass key and a strip of waterproof paper.
The paper contained eight numbers.
The key opened a storage locker in Grand Central Terminal.
Inside were copies of Ethan’s investigation, Julia’s notes, and a laptop wrapped in plastic.
A letter rested on top.
Grant,
If you find this, I failed to finish what Ethan began.
Do not hide the truth from Elena because you are afraid of losing another child. Fear disguised as protection is still control.
Grant read the line silently.
Elena took the letter from him and continued.
Julia discovered that Veridian’s technology was built partly from code stolen from her university research. Charles used settlement records from Grant’s old healthcare case to identify vulnerable clinics. Adrian then created false payment accounts in their names.
The money financed Veridian’s early growth.
Ethan found the shell accounts.
Julia found the stolen code.
Both threatened the company.
Julia’s death had been attributed to an aggressive cancer.
Her letter revealed that she had not suspected poisoning or direct harm. She knew she was ill. But she believed Adrian took advantage of her final months by pressing her to license the foundation patents.
She refused.
That was when he began courting Elena.
The laptop contained a video Julia recorded two weeks before her death.
She looked thin but alert.
“Adrian Cole will appear patient,” she said. “He studies the emotional needs of people the way other men study markets. Elena, he may make you feel understood. That does not mean every feeling is false. Dangerous people can experience affection. They simply rank it below control.”
Elena paused the video.
Grant looked away.
“Why didn’t she show me?”
“She wrote that you would confront Adrian before the evidence was safe.”
“She was right.”
“Yes.”
The word hurt him.
The laptop also held an unsent email to Elena. Julia had hesitated to warn her because Elena had only met Adrian twice by then.
The email ended with a request.
Trust your discomfort before you can prove it.
Elena thought about every question she had dismissed, every locked phone, every explanation she accepted because marriage seemed to require generosity.

Julia had not left a prophecy.
She left permission to believe herself.
