The Call From The Floor

Chapter 01 - The Call From The Floor

The first thing Lena Bennett felt was the cold of the marble floor.

The second was the sting along her cheek.

Above her, the Chicago penthouse glowed with the kind of luxury that made cruelty look impossible. White sofas faced the city windows. A low glass table reflected warm lamps. A crushed bouquet lay near Lena’s hand, pale flowers scattered across the polished stone. Her cream satin dress, chosen for the charity dinner downstairs, was wrinkled at the hip where she had fallen.

Grant Mercer stood over her in a gray suit, breathing hard. His expression held no panic, only irritation that she had forced him to become visible. Behind the sofa, Sienna Vale stared in a champagne gown, one hand pressed against the cushions. Until that moment, she had believed Grant’s wife was unstable, jealous, and safely on her way out of the marriage.

Lena reached toward the black phone lying a few inches from her fingers.

Grant’s shoe shifted closer. “Don’t make this worse.”

Lena looked up at him through tearful eyes. A faint bruise darkened one cheek; a scrape marked her forearm. Nothing graphic. Nothing he could not later call an accident.

“You brought her into our home,” Lena whispered.

“Our home?” Grant gave a short, ugly laugh. “You signed away every claim when you married me.”

He did not know she had never signed the final page.

He did not know the penthouse was held through a trust created before they met.

Most of all, he did not know who had created that trust.

Lena pulled the phone toward her and pressed one contact. She had avoided that number for six years, through loneliness, pride, and a marriage that taught her silence one bruise at a time.

The call connected.

A man’s voice answered immediately. “Lena?”

Grant’s face tightened. Sienna stepped around the sofa, confused.

Lena swallowed the pain in her throat.

“Dad,” she said. “I need you.”

Three seconds later, Grant’s own phone began ringing.

He looked down at the screen.

Mason Carter. Personal.

Grant stopped breathing.

The chairman whose approval controlled his career was calling him while the woman on the floor still held Mason Carter’s voice to her ear.

Lena watched recognition destroy her husband’s face.

Then Mason spoke through her phone, calm enough to terrify the room.

“Put me on speaker.”
