Grant’s Counterattack

Chapter 11 - Grant’s Counterattack

Grant did what frightened powerful men often do.

He attacked credibility.

Within hours, anonymous messages reached financial reporters claiming Lena had a history of emotional instability. A cropped photograph showed her leaving the hospital wrapped in a blanket. Old therapy records were requested through channels that should not have existed. A gossip account posted that Mason Carter’s “secret daughter” had staged a domestic crisis to seize control of the company.

Grant denied involvement.

Mara traced the first leak to a communications consultant paid through one of his personal holding companies.

Lena read the headlines from Mason’s lakefront house and felt the old instinct to disappear. Grant had predicted it well. He knew she hated public scrutiny. He knew the Carter name made every private wound look like strategy.

Mason found her in the library, phone face down on the desk.

“I can shut them down,” he said.

“How?”

“Lawyers. Injunctions. Calls.”

“That proves his story that I need your power to survive.”

Mason’s jaw tightened. “You do not need my power. You have access to it.”

“That difference is invisible from outside.”

Lena looked toward the lake. “I want to speak once. On my terms. No details that become entertainment. No pictures of the bruise. No tragic music.”

Mara arranged a single recorded statement with a neutral background and no questions.

Lena faced the camera in a white shirt, her voice controlled.

She said she was a shareholder, a survivor of coercive control, and a witness in an active corporate investigation. She said privacy should never be used as a shield for violence or fraud. She asked the public not to contact Sienna or publish medical information.

Most importantly, she did not name herself only as Mason’s daughter.

“I built a life outside my father’s name,” she said. “I will not let my husband’s actions force me back into being only an heir.”

The statement lasted two minutes.

Grant’s narrative collapsed before dinner.

Not because Mason silenced him.

Because Lena spoke before he could define the silence.
