The Emergency Board

Chapter 10 - The Emergency Board
The Carter Holdings board convened at eight the next morning.
No gala decorations remained. No champagne. No orchestra. Only a long walnut table, twelve directors, legal counsel, and a city skyline washed pale by dawn.
Grant arrived with his own attorney and a statement describing the penthouse incident as a private marital dispute. He wore a fresh navy suit and makeup over a small scratch near his jaw. He looked prepared to outlast truth through presentation.
Then Lena entered.
She wore a dark blue pantsuit borrowed from Mara, her cheek uncovered. Mason walked behind her, not ahead. Sienna entered separately and took a seat beside outside counsel.
The directors recognized Lena as Grant’s wife.
Mara distributed sealed ownership documents.
Recognition changed.
Lena stood at the far end of the table. “My legal name is Helena Evelyn Carter Bennett. I am the beneficial owner of twenty-one percent of Carter Holdings through the Bennett-Carter Trust.”
One director removed his glasses.
Grant stared straight ahead.
Lena continued. “Last night, Grant Mercer attempted to force my signature on documents transferring those shares. The signature was forged before I saw them.”
His attorney objected. Mara answered with forensic copies, file metadata, and a witness list.
Then the audio played.
Only selected sections. Grant’s demand. Lena’s refusal. The threat to portray her as unstable. Sienna’s arrival. The shove heard but not shown. Grant’s voice afterward: Look what you made me do.
Silence followed.
Grant leaned forward. “This recording lacks context.”
Sienna spoke. “I was the context.”
Every face turned to her.
She described the affair, the lies, the forged agreement, and the shove. She admitted her own choices without hiding behind Grant’s manipulation.
The board chair looked at Mason. “What action do you recommend?”
Mason looked at Lena.
She answered.
“Immediate suspension. Independent investigation. Preservation of all company devices and accounts. No private settlement that hides what he did.”
Grant finally looked at her.
“You’re destroying everything we built.”
May you like
Lena held his gaze.
“No,” she said. “I’m identifying who built it on me.”
