The Hospital Corridor

Chapter 09 - The Hospital Corridor

The private hospital corridor smelled of antiseptic and rain carried in on coats.

Lena sat beneath a soft blanket while a physician documented the bruise on her cheek, the scrape on her forearm, and the strain in her shoulder. No fractures. No graphic injuries. Yet the absence of catastrophe did not make the pattern small.

Mara photographed nothing without permission. Mason waited outside the room. Sienna gave her statement to an investigator in another wing. Grant had been escorted from the penthouse and informed not to contact Lena directly.

When the physician left, Lena stared at her hands.

They had stopped shaking.

That frightened her more than the shaking had.

Mara sat nearby. “Numbness is not consent. It is not weakness either.”

Lena gave a tired smile. “Do attorneys learn that in law school?”

“No. We learn it from clients after law school fails them.”

Mason appeared at the open doorway but did not enter.

Lena noticed. “You can come in.”

He took the chair across from her.

For several minutes they listened to a cart roll past and a distant elevator bell.

“Did you investigate him?” Lena asked.

Mason did not pretend confusion. “Before the wedding. Yes.”

“And?”

“He had ambition, debt, and no criminal history. He also had charm. Reports do not measure what charm becomes when it feels entitled.”

“You could have warned me.”

“You would have heard control.”

“I might have.”

“I was afraid losing the argument would mean losing you.”

Lena looked at him. “So you chose silence.”

“Yes.”

The answer carried no excuse.

She leaned back, exhausted. “Grant chose silence for me. You chose silence around me. Everyone keeps deciding silence is protection.”

Mason’s eyes lowered.

“What would protection look like now?” he asked.

Lena thought of the recording sealed with evidence, the forged papers, Sienna’s frightened face, Grant’s phone displaying Mason’s name.

“Tomorrow,” she said, “you do not speak first at the board meeting.”

Mason looked up.

“I do.”

May you like

He nodded.

For once, the most powerful man in the company accepted the chair beside the voice instead of the microphone before it.
