The Hearing

Chapter 15 - The Hearing
Grant’s preliminary hearing drew cameras to the courthouse steps.
Lena entered through a private side entrance but refused to hide her face. The bruise had faded to yellow, then disappeared. The damage it represented remained part of the record through photographs, medical notes, audio, and witness testimony.
Inside, Grant sat beside his attorneys in a dark suit. Without the penthouse, the title, and the constant agreement of employees, he looked ordinary. That unsettled Lena. Harm did not always wear a monstrous face. Sometimes it wore a familiar one and asked whether dinner was ready.
The charges included forgery, attempted fraud, unlawful access to financial records, and assault. The judge issued a protective order and restrictions on contact.
Grant’s attorney argued that the audio captured a volatile marital argument and an accidental fall.
Then Sienna testified.
She described the shove clearly. She admitted her relationship with Grant. She explained that he instructed her to come upstairs because Lena would be “easier to pressure with an audience.”
Grant stared at her with the same disbelief he once directed at Lena: the shock of a man discovering women could compare notes.
Mara introduced the phone recording and metadata proving it had not been edited.
The judge listened to Grant say, Look what you made me do.
No one in the courtroom moved.
When Lena was asked whether she wished to speak about continued protection, she stood.
“I do not believe he will respect a boundary simply because it is written,” she said. “He respected only consequences he believed were real.”
Grant looked at her then.
For a moment she saw the man from their first years—the man who danced badly in a small kitchen and brought coffee to her studio. Grief passed through her.
It did not change her answer.
The judge maintained the order and required electronic monitoring pending trial.
Outside, reporters shouted questions.
Lena did not stop.

Justice had not arrived as revenge.
It arrived as a door closing with official weight behind it.
