Charles’s Failure

Chapter 12 - Charles’s Failure

Charles had loved Victoria.

That truth complicated every discovery.

He married her three years after Eleanor died. Victoria helped him manage grief, raise Serena, and stabilize Hale Crown during a recession.

He trusted her with operations.

He also accepted distance from Dakota because Victoria described it as natural independence.

Letters from Dakota were delayed.

Calls were rescheduled.

Board questions were summarized rather than forwarded.

Charles did not know the full scheme.

He repeatedly accepted the person who controlled access as the person best able to explain the distance.

Dakota confronted him after the honeymoon.

“You opened the envelope when you saw the dress. Why didn’t you open my emails when I said something was wrong?”

Charles did not defend himself.

“I believed the explanation that required the least change from me.”

The sentence was painful and accurate.

Their repair began there.
