The Stitch Hidden in Plain Sight

Chapter 08 - The Stitch Hidden in Plain Sight

The damaged lace could not be restored before the ceremony.

A university textile conservator attending as a guest examined it.

One narrow embroidered strip remained intact along the inner hem.

It contained the complete silver-thread authentication pattern.

Victoria had cut the visible train and sleeves because she assumed the pattern appeared only there.

Eleanor had repeated it inside every major section.

The conservator proposed removing the intact strip and sewing it discreetly into a simple backup gown borrowed from the hotel costume archive.

Dakota declined at first.

She did not want the ceremony to become a trap for Victoria.

Naomi clarified that the covenant had already activated provisionally when the attempted destruction was documented and the envelope opened. Wearing the strip would confirm Dakota’s voluntary acceptance, not create the legal case.

Dakota considered her mother’s letter.

The lace was a witness.

Not a command.

She chose to sew the strip inside the cuff of a plain ivory dress.

Nobody outside the legal witnesses would see it.

The choice became private again.
