A Different Home

Chapter 17 - A Different Home
Ethan sold the house he had shared with Victoria.
Lucas did not want to return there.
Ethan moved into a smaller home near Anna’s apartment and Lucas’s school.
The new house had no hidden cameras.
Medical files stayed in a shared secure system accessible to Anna, Ethan, and Lucas’s advocate.
Lucas chose the color of his room.
Blue walls.
Yellow curtains.
No one made jokes about the hat.
Anna and Ethan attended school events separately at first.
Later, they sat in the same row.
They did not pretend to be a married couple.
They became cooperative parents.
One night after a science fair, Lucas asked whether they might become a family again.
Anna answered carefully.
“We are already your family. We may never become the same kind we were before.”
Lucas considered that.
“Can it still be good?”
“Yes,” Ethan said. “If we keep telling the truth.”

The promise sounded simple.
They understood how much work it required.
