The Trust in Lucas’s Name

Chapter 08 - The Trust in Lucas’s Name
Anna’s father, Dr. Samuel Reed, founded a network of children’s hospitals and neighborhood clinics.
He believed medical institutions should belong partly to patients and workers, not only investors.
Before his death, he placed thirty percent of the network into a trust for Lucas.
The trust carried a protection clause.
If anyone used fraudulent medical records to gain guardianship over Lucas, the shares would transfer into a permanent patient-and-employee foundation.
Victoria knew about the clause.
She needed the false records to appear legitimate before investigators discovered the identity fraud.
If the guardianship looked medically necessary, she could argue that the trust protection did not apply.
Anna’s survival threatened everything.
As Lucas’s biological mother and original trustee, she could challenge Victoria’s control of the network.
But Anna did not want to own the hospitals alone.
She had spent six years watching private authority turn healthcare into a prison.
She proposed activating the public foundation immediately.
Ethan supported her.
The Reed board resisted.
Directors warned that employee and patient control would frighten donors.
Maya attended the emergency meeting as a nursing representative.
“Donors were not locked in the lower level,” she said. “Patients were.”
Lucas joined by video for five minutes.
He wore no hat.
He said only one sentence.
“Please stop using my name for people I never met.”
The board fell silent.
A court froze all voting rights until a full public hearing could occur.

Victoria had spent years treating Lucas’s identity as a financial key.
Now the child had spoken for himself.
