Ethan’s House Was Not Safe

Chapter 09 - Ethan’s House Was Not Safe

Lucas was discharged to a protected family residence.

The court did not allow him to return immediately to Ethan’s home.

Victoria still held legal access to the property, and investigators found hidden cameras in the nursery, hallway, and study.

Ethan felt humiliated.

Anna did not comfort him.

“Your humiliation is not the emergency,” she said.

Lucas’s safety came first.

A child advocate asked Lucas where he wanted to stay.

He chose the protected residence with Anna nearby and supervised visits from Ethan.

Ethan accepted the arrangement.

He had spent years believing fatherhood gave him automatic access.

The court taught him something harder.

Being a parent created responsibility before it created permission.

During visits, Ethan avoided questioning Lucas about Victoria.

They built model airplanes, read comics, and argued about pizza toppings.

Ordinary time began repairing what dramatic promises could not.

One evening, Lucas asked why Ethan married Victoria.

“She helped when I was sad.”

“Did you love her?”

“I thought I did.”

“Did you believe her more than me?”

Ethan did not lie.

“Too many times.”

Lucas looked down.

“Why?”

“Because her explanations were easier.”

The answer hurt both of them.

It also gave Lucas a reality no adult had rewritten.
