The Clinic Behind the Trees

Chapter 03 - The Clinic Behind the Trees
North River Behavioral Clinic stood thirty miles outside the city behind tall cedar trees and a private security gate.
Its website described an exclusive center for children with anxiety, attention disorders, and family-adjustment problems.
Ethan had never authorized treatment there.
Detective Lena Ortiz from the state medical-fraud unit arrived at Saint Matthew’s before noon.
She reviewed the memory card, the medical patch, and Lucas’s records.
North River had submitted more than two hundred thousand dollars in insurance claims under Lucas’s name.
Most treatments supposedly occurred while he was in school.
The clinic was using his identity for other children—or for patients who did not exist.
Victoria had signed every form as his mother.
Ethan asked why she needed a behavioral diagnosis.
Ortiz showed him an emergency guardianship petition filed that morning.
The petition claimed Ethan traveled constantly and failed to recognize Lucas’s worsening mental condition.
Victoria requested sole medical and financial authority over the child.
Lucas owned a protected trust created by Anna’s father.
The trust controlled thirty percent of Reed Children’s Health Network and would activate on Lucas’s tenth birthday, only three weeks away.
If Victoria became his guardian first, she would control the voting rights.
The false clinic history made the petition appear necessary.
Ethan’s own signature supported the request.
It had been copied from business paperwork.
“I should have known,” Ethan said.
Maya looked at him.
“You should have checked. That is different from creating what she did.”
Ethan had allowed Victoria to manage school forms and medical scheduling because she appeared organized.
He interpreted Lucas’s quietness as healing.
Whenever the boy resisted Victoria, Ethan asked him to be respectful to the woman who had “saved their family.”
Lucas had been trying to tell him the family was not safe.
The memory card contained one final file named NORTH RIVER — LOWER LEVEL.
