Stay Away from My Daughter

Chapter 01 - Stay Away from My Daughter
The Vale Children’s Foundation gala glittered beneath three crystal chandeliers when the barefoot boy crossed the ballroom.
Guests noticed his worn gray shirt first.
Then the dust on his trousers.
Then the way security failed to stop him before he reached nine-year-old Lily Vale.
Lily sat beside the stage in a polished wheelchair, wearing a soft pink dress and white shoes. Two years earlier, a townhouse fire had left her with what doctors called permanent nerve damage.
Her father, Ethan Vale, was speaking with donors when he saw the boy extend one hand toward her.
“Stay away from my daughter.”
Ethan’s voice cut through the music.
He crossed the floor in a dark-green velvet tuxedo and placed himself between them.
The boy stopped immediately.
“I’m not trying to hurt her.”
“Security will help you outside.”
“I came because Mrs. Reed said Lily would forget how to stand if I waited any longer.”
Ethan froze.
Mara Reed had been Lily’s physical therapist. She disappeared eleven months earlier after being accused of stealing confidential patient files.
The boy reached beneath his collar and removed a narrow silver key.
A tiny star was engraved on it.
Lily leaned forward.
“My mother had one like that.”
The boy looked directly at her.
“She called you Little Star.”
Lily’s face changed.
Only her late mother had used that name.
Ethan lowered his arm but did not move aside.
“Who are you?”
“Noah Reed.”
The boy knelt and placed the silver key on the floor where everyone could see it.
Then he tapped the side of Lily’s wheelchair twice.
A concealed panel beneath the armrest opened.
Inside was a small black transmitter.
Noah pressed the key against it.
The wheelchair released a soft chime.
Lily’s foot moved.
Not a reflexive twitch.
She lifted it and placed it flat on the marble.
A physical therapist among the guests hurried forward, offered both hands, and asked Lily whether she wanted to try standing.
Lily nodded.
With careful support, she rose several inches from the chair.
Ethan stared at her.
The crowd gasped.
Noah did not smile.
“They’ve been keeping the therapy system locked,” he said. “My mother found the records.”
Behind the stage, Dr. Adrian Crowe—the physician who had managed Lily’s treatment—turned toward the service exit.
The ballroom doors entered evidence-preservation mode before he reached them.
