Chapter 05 - The Locker at Central Station
Ortiz opened the station locker under warrant.
Inside was a red backpack, three encrypted drives, a nurse’s notebook, and a recording addressed to Noah, Lily, and Ethan.
Mara appeared on screen inside an unfamiliar white room.
“If you are seeing this, Adrian Crowe has learned that I copied the mobility files.”
She explained that Noah’s false death was not an isolated event.
Crowe’s hospital used duplicate infant identities to bill private trusts and conceal unauthorized placements.
Some babies were moved into wealthy adoption networks.
Others were assigned to medical studies under changed names.
Noah was transferred because Eleanor’s family trust made him financially valuable.
Crowe planned to keep the child hidden until the trust could be redirected.
Mara found him first.
Years later, when Lily suffered an incomplete spinal injury in the townhouse fire, Crowe saw another opportunity.
He could classify Lily as permanently dependent, control the medical proxy, and delay the trust transfer.
Mara recorded genuine movement in Lily’s feet during therapy.
Crowe ordered her to remove it from the chart.
She refused.
The recording changed location midway through.
Mara whispered that she had been placed under an emergency psychiatric guardianship after reporting the fraud.
The white room belonged to Haven Crest Recovery Center, a private institution funded by Crowe Pediatric Systems.
“They call me delusional because I keep asking for Noah,” she said.
She had bribed a maintenance worker to place the backpack in the station locker.
The final file contained a map of Haven Crest’s lower level.
Room M-17 was circled.
Ortiz obtained a warrant.
By the time investigators reached the center, Room M-17 was empty.
A transport log showed Mara had been moved during the gala.
The destination field contained only two words:
VALE HOUSE.
