The Conservatory Below the Estate

Chapter 06 - The Conservatory Below the Estate

Police entered Vale House at dawn.

Ethan had not lived there for years, but the property remained under family ownership.

The conservatory appeared abandoned.

Behind a wall of dead vines, investigators found an elevator requiring Crowe’s biometric code.

A court technician bypassed it.

Below ground was a private rehabilitation suite with five patient rooms.

Mara occupied the last one.

She was alive, weak from medication, and completely oriented.

The room contained no chains.

A guardianship order, locked communications, and staff told she was dangerous had accomplished the same purpose.

Mara asked for Noah before speaking to Ethan.

Their reunion occurred in a hospital garden after independent doctors confirmed it was safe.

Noah stopped several feet away.

Mara opened both hands.

He crossed the distance when he chose.

Ethan watched from behind glass.

He wanted to enter.

The advocate told him to wait.

Fatherhood did not create automatic access to a child who had known him for one day.

Later, Mara agreed to meet Ethan.

Her first question was not whether he believed the evidence.

“Why did you stop asking where your son was buried?”

Ethan looked down.

Crowe told him Eleanor’s health would collapse if he challenged the hospital. The family held a private memorial without remains.

“I thought letting go protected her.”

“You protected yourself from uncertainty.”

The sentence hurt because it was accurate.

Mara did not accuse Ethan of creating the birth fraud.

She did not excuse the systems he funded, signatures he ignored, or questions he allowed Crowe to answer.

Then she told him something worse.

Eleanor had suspected Noah was alive until the day she died.

She sent Ethan letters.

Crowe intercepted them through the family medical office.

One copy remained hidden inside Lily’s wheelchair.
