The Test That Changed

Chapter 11 - The Test That Changed

Paul Harkin was found hiding in a motel near Newark.

He admitted accepting fifty thousand dollars to replace Mason’s DNA sample. The payment came through a shell company owned by Moretti Dining Group’s legal adviser.

The adviser blamed Vincent.

Vincent blamed the adviser.

The board suspended Vincent but stopped short of removing him. Too many directors had become wealthy under his leadership, and wealth often made doubt convenient.

Mason’s legal identity was restored as Luca Elias Moretti, though he asked everyone to keep calling him Mason.

“Luca is who I was,” he told Elias. “Mason is who survived.”

Elias understood.

Family court granted him temporary supervised custody. The first night together was not cinematic. Mason did not know where to put his toothbrush. Elias burned grilled cheese because he kept answering calls from lawyers. They argued about bedtime and whether fourteen was too old for a night-light.

At midnight, Mason found Elias sitting outside the locked nursery.

“You can change the room,” Elias said. “I should have done it years ago.”

“I don’t want the baby’s room.”

“I know.”

They spent the next day painting the walls gray and assembling a desk. The old mobile of copper spoons remained because Mason secretly liked the sound.

A package arrived without a return address.

Inside was Claire’s wedding ring and a key labeled 17.

Nora recognized the handwriting on the envelope as Claire’s.

“But Claire died thirteen years ago,” Mason said.

“The package may have been scheduled,” Dana replied. “Or someone kept it until now.”

They returned to the Bellamy cellar.

Mason and Nora placed both halves of the silver token into Locker 17. Elias inserted the key.

The door opened.

Inside were three leather recipe books, a miniature tape recorder, and a sealed jar of dried basil.

Claire’s voice filled the cellar when Elias pressed play.

“If Elias is hearing this, Vincent failed to erase us.”

Elias gripped the shelf.

Claire explained she had discovered diverted trust funds, falsified vendor contracts, and illegal loans secured against Elias’s restaurants. She copied the evidence into recipe books using ingredient quantities as account codes.

“The fire is my last chance to make them search the building,” she said. “I will create smoke in the kitchen and leave through the service stairs. Luca is already safe.”

Her voice paused.

“If the alarm does not sound, it means someone reached the detector.”

A loud noise interrupted the recording.

Claire whispered, “Vincent is here.”

The tape ended.

Mason opened the first recipe book.

Page after page contained numbers hidden inside sauces, baking temperatures, and serving counts.

One entry was circled in red.

V.M. — PURCHASE OF SAINT CATHERINE’S CLINIC.

The clinic had not simply helped Vincent after the fire.

He had purchased it six months before.

The abduction had been planned long before Claire struck the match.
