The Boardroom Dinner

Chapter 16 - The Boardroom Dinner
Elias entered Bellamy House through the front dining room.
Vincent waited at the center of the kitchen with a fuel can near his feet and a knife in his hand. Sprinklers had been disabled. Smoke curled along the ceiling.
“You brought the books?” Vincent asked.
Elias held them up.
Outside, Detective Brooks coordinated firefighters and tactical officers. The chained service doors delayed entry.
Mason and Nora entered through the coal tunnel.
The hidden passage opened behind the dry-storage shelves. Mason crawled into the pantry and reached the manual fire-wall control.
Vincent spoke while Claire’s recorder captured every word.
“You always had what I wanted,” he told Elias. “The talent. Father’s respect. Mother’s forgiveness. Even after I built the company, they called it your restaurant.”
“So you killed my family.”
“I saved the company from a child inheriting what I built.”
“You built it with my food and stolen money.”
Vincent laughed.
“Food disappears in ten minutes. Ownership remains.”
Elias placed the ledgers on the counter.
Vincent poured fuel over them.
Before he lit the match, Mason pulled the fire-wall lever.
Steel barriers dropped around the demonstration kitchen, trapping Vincent away from the main gas lines and isolating the flames.
Mason activated the emergency suppression system.
Foam exploded from the ceiling.
Vincent slipped, lost the match, and lunged toward Elias.
They struggled beside the pass where Mason had first seen the scar.
Vincent seized the knife.
Mason threw a metal tray. It struck Vincent’s wrist, and the knife slid across the floor.
Dana entered through the pantry with two officers.
Vincent was arrested beneath a rain of white foam while every kitchen camera recorded.
The Moretti board assembled that afternoon in the private dining room. Federal prosecutors played Claire’s recording, Beatrice’s statement, the DNA evidence, the fire map, and Vincent’s confession.
No director defended him.
The board voted to remove Vincent permanently and restore the shares held for Luca Moretti.
Mason now owned enough of the company to determine its future.
A lawyer asked whether he wanted to sell.
Mason looked through the glass at the kitchen staff.
“How many people did Vincent cheat through the charity?”
“Hundreds, potentially.”
“Pay them first.”
The lawyer blinked.
“And after that?”
Mason looked at Elias.
“Give the restaurants back to the people who actually work in them.”
Elias smiled.

The boy who had entered the kitchen with one cracked photograph now controlled an empire he had never asked for.
His first decision was to make sure no child would ever have to disappear for adults to become rich.
