The Nurse Named Nora

Chapter 08 - The Nurse Named Nora

Nora Bell contacted Mason directly.

A message appeared on his phone from an unknown number.

Come alone if you want to know why Claire stayed behind.

Mason showed Elias and Detective Brooks. Dana arranged surveillance around the meeting place, an abandoned community kitchen in Brooklyn.

Nora arrived wearing a gray coat and carrying the missing half of Claire’s silver token.

She was older than Ruth, with the same careful eyes.

Mason felt anger before gratitude.

“You left me,” he said.

Nora nodded.

“I thought I was protecting you.”

“Everyone says that after they disappear.”

The words struck Elias too.

Nora explained the night of the fire.

A private ambulance brought an unconscious infant to Saint Catherine’s. Vincent signed papers identifying the child as an unrelated emergency transfer. He ordered Nora to prepare the baby for transport to a clinic outside the city.

Nora recognized Luca from Claire’s visits.

She stole the baby from the transport room and gave him to Ruth. When she returned, Vincent’s men were waiting. She escaped and spent thirteen years moving under false names.

“Why was Luca sedated before the fire?” Dana asked.

“Claire gave him to someone she trusted,” Nora said. “She knew a fire was coming.”

Elias looked stunned.

“Claire knew?”

“She discovered Vincent had been moving money out of the family trust. She believed he planned to kill her and stage a tragedy that would give him control. She arranged for the baby to be taken to the hospital secretly.”

“Then why did she stay in the apartment?” Mason asked.

“To retrieve evidence.”

Nora placed her half of the token beside Mason’s.

Together, they formed a complete silver circle.

“The evidence is in Locker 17,” she said.

Before they could leave, the community kitchen lights went out.

A vehicle crashed through the rear doors.

Cal Mercer emerged with two men.

Police moved in, but Cal grabbed Nora and held a knife near her throat. He demanded the token.

Mason looked at Elias.

Then he threw the joined pieces across the room.

Cal released Nora and lunged for them.

Dana tackled him. Officers arrested the other men after a brief struggle.

The token struck the tile floor and separated again.

Nora began to laugh through her tears.

“What?” Mason asked.

“Claire designed it that way. The halves are useless unless pressed together inside the lock. Cal never understood.”

Cal was charged with kidnapping, arson conspiracy, and witness intimidation. Confronted with the old security photograph, he agreed to speak.

He admitted driving Vincent to the apartment.

But he claimed Vincent had not started the fire.

“Claire did,” Cal said.

Elias stood so quickly his chair overturned.

May you like

Cal smiled bitterly.

“She lit the match herself.”
