Claire’s Ledger

Chapter 14 - Claire’s Ledger

Police entered the coal tunnel before dawn.

Vincent had already left the hidden dining room, but he abandoned a laptop, cash, and passports. On the wall hung maps of Bellamy House and the Moretti apartment.

One map showed the fire plan in red ink.

The smoke detector.

The locked bedroom door.

The clinic ambulance route.

The restaurant pantry.

Thirteen years of lies had been reduced to one sheet of paper.

The laptop contained encrypted files. Claire’s recipe ledgers provided the key.

Every dish corresponded to a word. Basil meant transfer. Cinnamon meant witness. Three carrots meant March. A temperature of 450 meant account 450.

Mason helped Dana decode the first page because he understood Claire’s recipe habits better than the accountants.

The files exposed more than Vincent’s theft. He had used the Moretti charity to recruit teenagers from unstable homes, then routed grants through false training programs. Some of those young people were placed in kitchens where they worked without pay.

Mason felt sick.

Vincent had built a public image around helping children while profiting from children no one expected to be believed.

One file contained payments to judges, social workers, and laboratory technicians.

Another listed Ruth Grant.

For thirteen years, Vincent had paid a private investigator to watch her.

Ruth knew.

She had moved Mason between homes not because she was careless, but because each time the investigator came close, she placed him somewhere safer under a new variation of his name.

Her final foster petition had made the placement permanent.

“She spent her life running with me,” Mason said.

Nora nodded.

“And she never told me because she thought they watched me too.”

Elias looked at the ledger.

“Protection became a prison for all of us.”

The final file contained an audio recording from the night of the fire.

Vincent and Claire argued in the Bellamy pantry.

Claire accused him of stealing from Elias and planning to declare Luca dead so the child’s trust shares would transfer to company control.

Vincent replied, “A baby cannot run a boardroom.”

Claire said, “Neither can a thief.”

A struggle followed.

Then another voice entered.

Cal Mercer.

Cal told Vincent the apartment fire had grown beyond control and the wrong body remained inside.

Vincent ordered him to take Claire to the clinic.

The recording proved kidnapping.

It also revealed something unexpected.

Vincent repeatedly asked, “Where is my mother’s copy?”

Elias and Vincent’s mother, Beatrice Moretti, had supposedly died two years before the fire.

Yet Claire answered, “She gave it to me yesterday.”

Beatrice had been alive.

And she had known what Vincent was doing.
