The Cracked Photograph

Chapter 02 - The Cracked Photograph

Elias brought Mason into his private office above the kitchen.

The room contained shelves of cookbooks, framed awards, and a single photograph of a dark-haired woman standing beside a crib. A brass plaque beneath the frame read: CLAIRE AND LUCA, 2013.

Mason looked at the woman.

He had seen her face before.

A smaller version of the same photograph had been hidden behind Ruth’s picture of the chef.

“Who is she?” Mason asked.

Elias closed the office door.

“My wife.”

“Where is she now?”

“She died in the same fire.”

Mason stared at him. Elias’s eyes were red, but his posture remained stiff, as though grief had hardened into architecture inside him.

Vincent entered without knocking.

“This conversation ends now,” he said. “We call the police, report an attempted fraud, and let professionals handle it.”

Mason backed toward the desk.

Elias stepped between them.

“He knew about the alarm.”

“Anyone could know about the fire. It was in every newspaper.”

“The alarm detail was never released.”

Vincent’s jaw tightened.

Mason opened his backpack and took out a yellow envelope. Ruth had written his name on the front.

Inside were three objects: the cracked photograph, an old hospital bracelet marked BABY MORETTI, and half of a silver restaurant token stamped with the Bellamy House crest.

Elias picked up the bracelet.

His hands began to shake.

“This was Luca’s.”

Vincent laughed sharply. “Or a copy.”

Elias turned the bracelet over. On the inside, scratched by hand, were the letters E.M. and a tiny star.

“I marked it myself before they took him to the nursery.”

Mason felt the floor tilt beneath him.

“Are you saying I’m Luca?”

“I don’t know,” Elias said.

Vincent moved toward the phone.

“I am calling security.”

Mason pulled out one final thing: a folded note written in Ruth’s uneven handwriting.

Elias read it aloud.

Elias Moretti,

I am sorry I waited so long. I was told the child would be killed if I contacted you. The fire report is false. The infant taken from Saint Catherine’s Hospital survived. Ask Vincent who signed the transfer papers.

Ruth Grant

No one spoke.

Vincent’s face hardened.

“I signed hundreds of documents for the family after the fire. Elias was in surgery. Someone had to manage the crisis.”

Elias looked at the scar across his hand.

He had received it breaking through the burning apartment door.

“I searched every room,” he said. “They told me Claire and Luca were already gone.”

Mason watched the brothers.

One looked shattered.

The other looked angry that the past had returned without permission.

A knock sounded. Restaurant security waited outside.

Vincent opened the door.

“Remove the boy.”

Elias closed it again.

“No.”

“You are not thinking clearly.”

“For thirteen years, I have thought about nothing else.”

Vincent lowered his voice.

“If this becomes public, every liar with a photograph will appear at our door.”

“Then we test the truth.”

Elias reached for his phone and called Dr. Naomi Price, a physician he trusted.

“I need a private DNA test tonight,” he said.

Vincent walked to the window.

Mason saw his hand disappear into his pocket.

A moment later, a message appeared on Vincent’s phone screen reflected in the glass.
