The Night of the Fire

Chapter 15 - The Night of the Fire

Beatrice Moretti had not died in Italy as the family announced.

Financial records showed she entered a private rehabilitation center in Vermont under another name. She had suffered a stroke but remained alive until eight months after the fire.

Elias had been told his mother was buried overseas.

Vincent had isolated her after she discovered the missing trust money.

The rehabilitation center preserved one video statement.

Beatrice sat in a wheelchair, speaking slowly but clearly.

“My eldest son believes the family belongs to whoever controls its papers. Elias believes it belongs to whoever feeds people. I was weak when strength was required.”

She explained that Vincent had forged board documents and pressured her to sign control of the restaurant group to him. Claire obtained copies and planned to expose him.

Beatrice gave Claire the second half of the silver token and instructed her to hide the evidence.

“I did not believe Vincent would harm a child,” she said. “That was my final mistake.”

The video ended with an apology to Elias.

He watched without moving.

Mason sat beside him.

“Everyone thought silence would prevent something worse,” Mason said.

“And every silence gave him another room to hide in.”

Dana reconstructed the night of the fire.

Claire placed Luca with a trusted neighbor, who delivered him to Saint Catherine’s using a false name. Vincent’s clinic employees intercepted the baby. Nora rescued him.

Claire returned to the apartment to trigger smoke and force public attention onto the building. Vincent had removed the alarm battery and locked the bedroom door, expecting Claire and Luca to die together.

Elias arrived unexpectedly from the restaurant and broke through the window, receiving the scar.

Claire escaped through a service stairway, reached Bellamy House, and hid the ledgers. Vincent found her and had her taken to the clinic.

Two unidentified bodies were used to complete the false death reports.

Every part of the tragedy required institutions to accept paperwork over questions.

Hospital.

Police.

Court.

Company.

Funeral home.

Vincent did not create the system. He understood how easily it could be purchased.

A message arrived on Elias’s phone.

It was a live video of Vincent standing inside the Bellamy House kitchen.

Behind him, flames rose from the pantry.

“You wanted the truth,” Vincent said. “Come watch it burn.”

Fire crews were dispatched, but Vincent had chained the main service doors from inside.

He demanded Elias bring the original recipe ledgers alone.

Mason saw the video and recognized the station behind Vincent.

The flames were not near the pantry.

They were in the old demonstration kitchen, where an automatic fire wall could seal the room.

Vincent had built another trap.

Elias took the ledgers.

Mason placed Claire’s recorder inside the cover.

“Rich men look at vaults,” he said. “Mothers look at cupboards.”

“And chefs?”

Mason looked at the kitchen map.

“Chefs look at exits.”
