The Locked Pantry

Chapter 13 - The Locked Pantry

Elias, Mason, Nora, and Detective Brooks traveled to the care facility under police protection.

Catherine Bell had spent thirteen years in a minimally conscious state after severe smoke inhalation and a head injury. The facility director claimed her fees were paid through an anonymous trust.

The trust belonged to Vincent’s shell company.

Claire lay in a sunlit room overlooking a garden.

Elias stopped at the doorway.

He had buried her, mourned her, and carried conversations with her memory for more than a decade. Now she was breathing twenty feet away.

Mason approached the bed first.

Claire’s hair had silver strands. Her face was thinner than in the photograph, but the shape of her eyes matched his.

“Mom?” he whispered.

Her eyelids moved.

The nurse warned them not to expect recognition.

Mason took the dried basil jar from Locker 17 and opened it beneath Claire’s nose.

He hummed the seven-note kitchen song.

Claire’s fingers moved.

Elias knelt beside the bed.

“It’s me.”

A tear slid from the corner of Claire’s eye.

She could not speak, but she squeezed his scarred hand once.

Then she squeezed Mason’s twice.

The neurologist called the response meaningful.

Vincent’s attorneys attempted to block access to Claire, claiming the visit could endanger her health. The effort only drew more attention to the secret payments.

A handwriting expert confirmed Claire wrote the recipe ledgers.

Prosecutors prepared fraud, kidnapping, and attempted murder charges.

But when police arrived at Vincent’s penthouse, he was gone.

His passport remained in the safe. His private plane had not left the country.

Someone inside the company was helping him.

That night, the care facility lost power.

Backup generators failed on Claire’s wing.

Mason woke in a visitor chair when alarms began to sound. Elias called for nurses while Dana searched the corridor.

A man in medical scrubs entered Claire’s room carrying a syringe.

Mason recognized him from Bellamy House.

It was the temporary executive chef appointed by Vincent.

Mason shoved a rolling tray into the man’s legs. The syringe fell. Elias restrained him until officers arrived.

The syringe contained enough sedative to stop Claire’s breathing.

The man confessed Vincent paid him through the restaurant charity.

He also revealed Vincent was hiding inside Bellamy House.

“He says no one will search the building he owns.”

Dana smiled without humor.

“Then he never understood kitchens.”

Every kitchen had doors owners forgot and workers remembered.

Mason knew exactly which one Vincent would choose.

The hidden pantry passage led not only to Claire’s room.

It continued beneath the building toward the original coal tunnels.

And at the far end stood a private dining room no longer shown on any blueprint.
