Anna and Vanessa

Chapter 13 - Anna and Vanessa

The sisters began meeting once a week.

Their first conversations were full of missing years.

Vanessa remembered Anna as fearless.

Anna said fear had shaped nearly every decision.

Anna remembered Vanessa as shallow.

Vanessa described years spent competing for Samuel’s approval while believing Anna chose disappearance over family.

Both had accepted simplified versions of the other.

They attended therapy together.

Anna did not want to live at the family estate.

Vanessa stopped offering.

Vanessa did not ask Anna to publicly forgive her for chairing Bright Steps.

Anna did not pretend Vanessa’s ignorance equaled Victor’s intent.

Their relationship grew through smaller acts.

Vanessa sent documents before meetings rather than summaries.

Anna asked permission before discussing Eli publicly.

When they disagreed, neither called the other unstable, selfish, or ungrateful.

One afternoon, Vanessa brought Leo to the park.

Eli pushed the stroller on a flat path.

Anna watched the brake indicator.

Vanessa noticed.

“You can check it.”

Anna did.

No one laughed.

Safety did not become an accusation simply because the family wanted to move forward.
