What the Brass Key Opened

Chapter 04 - What the Brass Key Opened
Langford House had been built by Samuel’s grandfather in 1928.
The original basement contained coal tunnels, staff lockers, and a mechanical vault used to store employee pension records.
Anna loved exploring those corridors as a child.
The crescent key opened Locker 42.
Inside were three ledgers, a small camera, children’s intake files, and an audio recorder wrapped in oilcloth.
Anna’s voice filled the basement.
“If Eli reaches the lion doors, then Crown Family Services has begun moving children faster than I can trace them.”
She explained that Bright Steps did more than distribute defective baby equipment.
The charity used real children’s identities to collect donations, government reimbursements, and scholarship funds.
Some children appeared in multiple facilities at the same time.
Others were listed as dead while accounts continued receiving money.
Anna discovered the system while auditing a Langford warehouse.
Victor Shaw controlled the legal records.
Crown Family Services managed the placements.
Several Langford executives approved contracts without examining the children behind the numbers.
Anna believed her own family would stop the fraud.
Samuel delayed action because the company was preparing a public offering.
Vanessa was twenty-six and working overseas. She received only Victor’s explanation that Anna suffered a breakdown after stealing files.
Anna began copying records into Locker 42.
The final audio message was dated six weeks earlier.
“I am alive. They call me Patient A-42 at Northgate Renewal Center.”
Samuel gripped the edge of the table.
Northgate was a private psychiatric and neurological facility partly funded by the Langford Foundation.
Victor had told the family it housed retired employees with memory disorders.
Anna’s recording continued.
“They use guardianship orders to control anyone who can correct the records. Do not arrive alone. Do not let Victor choose the doctor.”
District Attorney Lena Ortiz obtained an emergency warrant.
Northgate received notice through the court system.
