The Child Named Eli Carter

Chapter 02 - The Child Named Eli Carter

Paramedics examined the boy inside the store’s private medical room.

His name was Eli Carter. He was ten years old, dehydrated, exhausted, and frightened of anyone wearing a security badge.

The scrapes on his hands were minor. The cut beside his cheek required only a small bandage.

Leo remained unharmed.

Vanessa sat several feet away while a child advocate spoke with Eli.

She wanted to apologize immediately.

The advocate asked her to wait.

An apology could become another demand if the harmed child had no room to refuse it.

Samuel Langford arrived twenty minutes later.

At seventy-one, he still carried the authority of the man whose name appeared above stores in sixteen cities.

Vanessa handed him the photograph.

Samuel’s face changed.

“Anna.”

He turned it over.

On the back, in Anna’s handwriting, were six words:

ELI IS MY SON. TRUST THE KEY.

Samuel sat down.

Eight years earlier, Anna’s car had been found burned near an abandoned Langford warehouse. Investigators found no verified remains, but family attorney Victor Shaw produced records showing that Anna had withdrawn money and fled after an internal dispute.

The family declared her dead two years later.

Eli said he lived with Anna until he was six.

They moved often and used different last names.

Then men came to their apartment.

Anna took Eli to a private children’s residence and promised to return after one week.

She never did.

The residence changed his surname, moved him through three placements, and repeatedly told him his mother was imaginary.

Two months earlier, a retired nurse gave him the key and photograph.

“She said my mom left them for me.”

“Where have you been since then?” Samuel asked.

Eli looked toward the floor.

“The last home closed. They sent us to another place. I left when they tried to take the key.”

He had traveled by bus using money the nurse gave him. For two nights, he slept inside a twenty-four-hour transit station.

Then he found the bronze lion doors from Anna’s description.

Vanessa stared at the coins she had assumed were from begging.

They were the last dollars he possessed.
