Eli’s First Stable Room

Chapter 15 - Eli’s First Stable Room

Anna and Eli moved into an apartment chosen with a family-reunification team.

It had two bedrooms, a small kitchen, and a view of a public playground.

Eli kept food beneath his mattress for several months.

Anna did not punish him or remove it without permission.

A therapist helped them create a pantry shelf that belonged entirely to him.

He also slept wearing the brass key.

The Locker 42 archive was now secure.

The key no longer opened anything active.

Still, it represented the instruction that carried him to the lion doors.

Anna asked whether he wanted it placed in a safe.

“No.”

She accepted the answer.

School was difficult at first.

Eli had gaps in reading and mathematics from repeated moves.

The Langford trust could have placed him in an elite private academy.

He chose the neighborhood public school because he liked the art teacher.

Tutors supported him without turning every evening into repair work.

Some days, he wanted to play basketball instead.

Anna learned that rebuilding a childhood did not mean filling every missing hour with improvement.

Samuel visited according to schedule.

Vanessa brought Leo only when Eli agreed.
