The Woman in the Transport Van

Chapter 05 - The Woman in the Transport Van

State police stopped the van at a highway service station.

Anna Langford sat in the rear beside a private nurse and two locked document cases.

She was forty-two now, her dark hair threaded with silver near the temples.

She knew her name, the date, and where she wanted to go.

The nurse carried a guardianship order declaring Anna unable to make medical decisions.

Judge Evelyn Crowne had signed it eight years earlier.

Victor Shaw was listed as temporary legal representative.

Temporary had never ended.

Anna refused to see Samuel immediately.

She asked for Eli.

The child advocate prepared both of them.

Their reunion took place inside a quiet hospital garden.

Anna sat on a bench.

Eli approached holding the brass key.

“You came back,” he said.

“I tried every day.”

“Why didn’t you find me?”

Anna’s face folded with grief.

“They changed your name and moved you whenever someone searched.”

Eli remained several feet away.

Anna opened both hands.

He crossed the distance when he chose.

Vanessa watched through a window with Samuel.

Neither entered the garden.

The reunion did not belong to the family brand or the news cameras gathering outside.

Later, Anna agreed to speak with Vanessa.

She studied her sister’s cream coat.

“You were outside the store.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I told him to move.”

Anna closed her eyes.

Vanessa expected anger.

Anna gave her something harder.

“Do not make his rescue of your son the reason he deserved your attention.”

Vanessa began crying.

Anna continued.

“He deserved help before he did anything useful for you.”

That sentence became the line Vanessa returned to whenever guilt tried to transform itself into a story about redemption.
