Leo Learns the Story

Chapter 19 - Leo Learns the Story
When Leo was nine, he asked why Eli always checked stroller brakes.
Vanessa explained the story without making Eli responsible for entertaining him with details.
“The stroller moved when you were a baby. Eli stopped it.”
“Did he save my life?”
“He kept you safe during a dangerous moment.”
“Why was he outside the store?”
“He was trying to find our family, and I did not listen.”
Leo looked surprised.
“You were mean?”
“Yes.”
“Are you still mean?”
“Sometimes I still make unfair choices. I work to notice and correct them.”
Leo later asked Eli about the incident.
Eli said, “You cried a lot.”
Leo laughed.
They played video games.
The rescue did not become a debt between them.
Leo’s life did not belong to Eli because Eli stopped the stroller.
