Cole Comes Home Slowly

Chapter 12 - Cole Comes Home Slowly
Cole left the hospital after six months.
He did not move directly in with Mara and Ellie.
Years of medication had damaged his memory, balance, and trust.
He rented a small apartment above the Iron Hollow repair garage.
Ellie visited every Wednesday.
At first, they assembled model motorcycles because conversation was harder.
Cole remembered how to tune an engine before he remembered Ellie’s birthday.
She pretended not to care.
Mara told her it was acceptable to care.
One afternoon, Cole found the drawing with his face crossed out.
“Why did you do that?”
“I thought you left us.”
“I thought I killed people on the bridge.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Then why did you believe them?”
Cole looked at his hands.
“Because guilt is easier to control than confusion.”
Ellie erased one black line from the drawing.
Not all of them.
Family court recognized Cole as her father but allowed Ellie to choose the pace of contact.
