The Promise in the Medal
Chapter 19 - The Promise in the Medal
Years later, Ellie learned the inscription inside the Rourke medal.
The letters were too faint to see until a conservator cleaned the metal.
IF LOST, FIND THE ONE WHO KEEPS HIS WORD.
Their grandfather had engraved it before giving the medal to Mara.
Ellie asked Jack whether he always kept promises.
“No.”
“Then why did Mom send me to you?”
“Because she remembered the ones that mattered.”
Mara stood nearby.
“I sent you because he would believe a frightened child before believing a sheriff.”
Jack looked at Ellie.
That was the promise.
Not rescue.
