The Sheriff’s Son

Chapter 09 - The Sheriff’s Son
Ethan Vale was sixteen.
Unlike his father, he avoided cameras and spent most afternoons repairing bicycles at a church workshop.
He called Ellie from a prepaid phone.
“I have the medal.”
“Where are you?”
“I can’t tell you.”
“Are you kidnapped?”
“No. My dad is lying.”
Ethan had overheard Vale planning to destroy the document case. He stole the medal and fled.
But he did not trust Jack.
His father spent years telling him the Iron Wolves killed Vale’s brother during a bar fight.
Mara knew the truth.
Vale’s brother died in a construction collapse caused by falsified safety inspections. Vale blamed the club to protect the family company.
Ellie told Ethan what her mother taught her:
“Bring the medal somewhere with windows.”
He chose the public library.
State police surrounded the building quietly.
Jack entered unarmed.
Ethan held the medal in one hand and a pocketknife in the other.
“I don’t know who is telling the truth.”
Jack placed the Rourke medal on the table.
“Neither did your father when he was your age. Then he learned lies gave him power.”
Ethan studied the matching scratches.
He lowered the knife.
Together, the boys—one frightened child and one frightened teenager—carried the medals to Locker Seventeen.
The case opened.
Inside were original land deeds, chemical test results, and a tape recorded by Vale’s father.
The recording proved the dumping scheme began thirty years earlier.
It also revealed that Vale’s father ordered the death of Jack and Mara’s parents after they threatened to report it.

Daniel Vale inherited both the crime and the silence.
He chose to continue them.
