The Child in County Care
Chapter 04 - The Child in County Care
Jack and Amos were arrested on drug possession charges.
Rosa remained free because her name did not appear on the search warrant. She retrieved the memory card from the jukebox after deputies left.
Ellie was placed at the Gray County Children’s Center.
Sheriff Vale visited her before any social worker completed intake.
He brought a stuffed bear and sat across from her in a small interview room.
“Where is the card?”
Ellie looked at the one-way glass.
“I don’t know.”
Vale placed the bear on the table.
“Your mother is alive. You can see her after you help me.”
Ellie’s face changed.
“Where?”
“Somewhere safe.”
“Then let me talk to her.”
Vale’s smile faded.
“Adults cannot fix things when children refuse to cooperate.”
Ellie touched the small audio recorder Rosa had clipped beneath her jacket lining before the raid.
It transmitted through an emergency frequency used by club medics.
Rosa listened from a van outside.
Vale continued.
“Jack Rourke is not your uncle. He abandoned your mother. I protected both of you.”
Ellie remembered Mara’s final warning:
People who protect you do not need you to forget everyone else.
She asked Vale why he buried an empty casket.
He stood so quickly the chair fell.
The recording captured everything.
Rosa sent a copy to Detective Lena Brooks with the state police. Lena had investigated complaints against Vale for two years but lacked a witness willing to speak.
Now she had a child asking the sheriff about a staged death.
Lena obtained an emergency order moving Ellie into state custody.
Vale tried to stop the transfer.
The judge demanded he explain why he personally questioned a child without counsel.
By midnight, Ellie was placed in a protected foster home.
Jack remained in jail.
Rosa brought Lena the memory card.
The remaining files showed land deeds, bank transfers, and video of trucks entering an abandoned mine outside Cedar Ridge.
The mine sat beneath land purchased by Vale Development Partners.
The brass key Ellie carried opened a railway locker near that mine.

The files did not reveal Mara’s location.
One audio clip contained only the sound of a train and a woman counting backward from seventeen.
