Anne Dawson’s Voice

Chapter 11 - Anne Dawson’s Voice

Anne’s cassette began with the sound of diner dishes.

She recorded it in Booth Seven the night Evelyn disappeared.

“I am making this because Mr. Cross’s people keep changing files.”

Anne described helping Evelyn deliver Lily, hiding the microfilm, and moving Samuel’s evidence to the grain silos.

Then she named the person who ordered her death.

Richard Vale.

Anne knew her medication had been replaced. She stopped taking it and staged her own overdose.

The body buried under her name belonged to an unidentified Green Hollow patient.

Claire froze.

“My mother may be alive.”

The recording gave a location:

Saint Agnes Mission, New Mexico.

Federal agents contacted the mission.

A woman named Anna Day had worked there for nineteen years.

She was alive.

Claire flew west the next morning.

Anne met her in a small garden.

Time had changed her face but not her eyes.

Claire did not hug her.

“You left me.”

Anne nodded.

“They told me they would take you to Green Hollow.”

“So you let me grow up believing you chose drugs over me.”

“Yes.”

“Was that protection?”

“It was fear.”

Anne had watched Claire from a distance through Ruth’s letters. She believed returning would reopen the threat.

Claire wanted to forgive her.

She could not do it on command.

Anne agreed to testify.

They returned to Northbridge separately.

At the airport, Anne saw Lily waiting beside Evelyn.

Three generations of women stood beneath the arrivals sign, each carrying a different version of the same silence.

No one pretended reunion erased it.
