Lily’s Choice

Chapter 15 - Lily’s Choice

The family court offered Lily several options.

She could live with Evelyn.

She could live with Samuel after a transition period.

Madeline requested shared family access.

Ruth offered the apartment above the diner.

Lily listened to adults discuss her future for three hours.

Then she asked everyone to leave except the judge.

Her decision surprised them.

She wanted to stay with Evelyn but spend weekends at the diner and visit Samuel gradually.

She wanted no surname change.

Gray belonged to the foster mother who protected her for two years before dying.

“People keep telling me my real name,” Lily said. “Gray is real too.”

The judge approved.

Samuel struggled with the decision.

He had imagined his daughter carrying Miller.

Evelyn reminded him that fatherhood was not a correction on a form.

He began with short visits.

They played cards in Booth Seven.

He told Lily about accounting because it was the only subject he knew how to explain without crying.

She found it boring.

That helped.

Ordinary disappointment was a form of safety.
