Madeline avoided the diner after losing Crosswell leadership.
She feared every table carried someone she failed.
Evelyn invited her anyway.
They met in Booth Seven.
Madeline brought no attorneys.
“I believed Father because believing him allowed me to keep my life,” she said.
Evelyn looked at the rain outside.
“I believed silence kept Lily alive.”
“Did it?”
“For a while.”
They did not compete over guilt.
Madeline asked whether Evelyn wanted a relationship.
“I want honesty,” Evelyn said. “We will see what grows around it.”
They began with monthly coffee.
