Green Hollow House
Chapter 04 - Green Hollow House
Green Hollow House stood behind iron gates in the northern hills.
The facility called itself a private recovery residence for patients requiring long-term psychiatric care.
Detective Ortiz obtained a warrant.
The director claimed no patient named Evelyn Cross had ever lived there.
Madeline showed him the recent death certificate.
He called it forged.
Claire noticed a silver key symbol on the facility’s old elevator panel.
The same wheat stalk appeared beneath it.
Crosswell’s original grain division had used that symbol before the company modernized its logo.
The basement elevator required a physical key.
Lily’s necklace opened it.
Below the facility was a sealed medical wing not listed on any inspection report.
Rooms contained restraints, expired medication, and handwritten observation logs.
One file identified a female patient as Jane Wheat.
Age twenty-five at admission.
Pregnant.
Memory intact.
“Delusional belief that family corporation committed financial crimes.”
The file included photographs of Evelyn.
Madeline sat down.
Her sister had been alive.
Green Hollow staff delivered Evelyn’s baby under a false name. Six months later, the infant was transferred to a foster couple paid through Crosswell accounts.
The couple died in a house fire when Lily was five.
Afterward, Lily moved through undocumented homes controlled by Victor Hale.
He had spent four years trying to make the child disappear legally.
The final medical note said Evelyn escaped Green Hollow six weeks earlier.
The death certificate was false.
Lily’s mother might still be alive.
At the bottom of the file, Claire found a handwritten message:
BOOTH SEVEN. UNDER THE SEAT. TRUST THE WAITRESS WHO FEEDS FIRST.
Evelyn had sent Lily to the diner.
She knew Claire would protect a hungry child before asking who she was.
But Claire had never met Evelyn.
“How did she know me?” Claire asked.
May you like
Ruth looked away.
“Because your mother worked here too.”
