The Board Comes to the Diner

Chapter 09 - The Board Comes to the Diner

Richard Vale arrived at Miller’s Diner with six attorneys and a demolition order.

He wore a dark navy suit and the calm expression of a man who expected every room to recognize his authority.

Workers waited outside with fencing and machinery.

The order declared the building structurally unsafe.

Claire stood behind the counter.

“Inspection was completed last month.”

Richard placed a new report beside the coffee pot.

“Conditions changed.”

“You changed the report.”

“That accusation will be addressed in court.”

Madeline entered from the kitchen.

“You are already under investigation.”

“I am still acting chief executive.”

Samuel stepped into view.

Richard’s face tightened.

“You should be dead.”

“So should half the people your company buried in paperwork.”

Ruth locked the front door.

Employees and retired Crosswell workers filled the diner.

They carried old pay stubs showing pension deductions.

Samuel placed the microfilm ledger on Booth Seven.

Madeline inserted the silver key into the table column.

A hidden recorder activated.

The Crosswell charter appeared on a portable screen.

Richard’s lawyers challenged the procedure.

Samuel read the clause aloud.

Fraud against employee pensions transferred controlling shares to a restitution trust upon verification by the administrator and one Cross family heir.

Madeline signed.

Evelyn signed as heir.

Lily signed as beneficiary with court approval.

Samuel pressed his hand to the biometric plate beneath the table.

The trust activated.

Crosswell voting control left the family board and entered the employee trust.

Richard no longer had authority to demolish the diner.

Outside, machinery engines stopped.

Richard stared at the screen.

Then he smiled.

“You activated exactly what I needed.”

The pension trust account showed a zero balance.

Someone had moved every dollar one minute before the vote.
