The Hidden Compartment

Chapter 13 - The Hidden Compartment

The silver key fob opened more than the car.

Arthur knew where to place it.

Not in the door. Not in the ignition. Near a hidden panel beneath the dashboard that Michael had once proudly called “paranoid elegance.” The sedan responded with a soft mechanical click. The panel opened.

Inside was a narrow compartment.

Empty.

Arthur’s face fell.

Evan exhaled too quietly.

Noah heard it.

His father had taught him that guilty people often react to absence before innocence understands what is missing.

Noah crouched beside the sedan, ignoring the ache in his shoulder. He looked under the driver’s seat, then at the panel again. Something about the compartment bothered him. It was too clean. Too recently wiped.

“My dad said old cars remember hands,” Noah murmured.

Arthur looked at him.

Noah reached into the edge of the compartment and ran his finger along the seam. A small strip of black adhesive came loose. Behind it was a micro storage card taped flat against the interior wall.

Evan whispered, “No.”

Arthur heard.

Noah held up the card.

The room became very still.

Arthur looked at Evan, then at the card, then back at Noah.

“Your father taught you well.”

Noah swallowed hard.

“He taught me because he knew he might not get to finish.”

Arthur’s eyes filled, but he did not look away.

This time, Daniel Reed’s evidence had reached the right hands.

And the boy who delivered it was no longer on the floor.
