The Key On The Marble Floor / Chapter 6 / 19

Daniel Reed’s Name

Chapter 06 - Daniel Reed’s Name

Daniel Reed had been a ghost in Arthur Whitaker’s life for twelve years.

Not dead until now, but gone in the way men disappear when trust becomes too dangerous. Daniel had once been Arthur’s best mechanic, the only person allowed near private prototypes, vintage restorations, and vehicles tied to family history. He could hear an engine and tell whether the problem was mechanical, electrical, or human.

Arthur trusted him more than most executives.

Then the Whitaker heirloom sedan vanished for six weeks during a private transfer.

When it returned, a data module was missing, company records had been altered, and Daniel Reed was blamed for theft. He disappeared before Arthur could confront him. Lawyers called him guilty. Insurance investigators called him convenient. Arthur never fully believed either.

The silver key fob had vanished with him.

Not just a key.

A custom access device tied to the sedan’s hidden archival system, built for Arthur’s late son before the crash that destroyed half the Whitaker family and nearly the company’s future.

Now the key lay on the marble floor beside the car.

And Daniel Reed’s son was breathing hard in pain because Arthur’s own showroom manager had shoved him.

Arthur felt old anger return, sharpened by shame.

“Daniel Reed is dead,” Noah said.

The words landed quietly.

Arthur looked at the boy. “When?”

“Three days ago.”

“How?”

“They said heart failure.”

“You don’t believe them.”

Noah’s eyes lifted. “Do you?”

Arthur did not answer.

Evan swallowed. “Sir, this is inappropriate for the showroom floor.”

Arthur stood slowly.

“Inappropriate,” he repeated.

His voice had the softness of a locked office door before a firing.

Evan forced a smile. “I was protecting the vehicle.”

“No,” Arthur said. “You were protecting yourself from a boy with a key you recognized.”

Evan’s face went pale.

Noah saw it.

So did the guests.

The wealthy crowd leaned closer without moving.

Arthur extended one hand to Noah.

“Can you stand?”

Noah nodded.

May you like

Arthur helped him up carefully.

The key stayed on the floor, untouched, shining between them.
