The Arrest

Chapter 16 - The Arrest

Evan was not arrested that night for murder.

Truth rarely arrives that neatly.

But he was detained for assaulting Noah, obstructing evidence, and attempting to interfere with property connected to an active internal investigation. His father’s crimes would require warrants, records, old financial trails, and people willing to testify after twelve years of profitable silence.

Arthur made the first call himself.

Not to company lawyers.

To police.

Then to the independent investigators he had once refused to hire.

Evan stood near the front entrance, hands shaking, showroom security on either side. His hair had lost its slick perfection. His black tie hung slightly crooked. Without authority, he looked younger and uglier, a man who had borrowed power from a dead lie.

As officers arrived through the main glass doors, Noah stepped back.

Arthur stood beside him.

Evan looked at the boy. “I didn’t kill your father.”

Noah’s face hardened.

“You shoved his son.”

That silenced Evan.

The officers led him out past the velvet ropes. Outside, rain had started again, turning the glass walls into mirrors. Wealthy guests still lingered beyond the entrance, whispering, pretending not to watch while watching everything.

Noah picked up his backpack. The slipped strap hung awkwardly. He adjusted it with a wince.

Arthur noticed.

“You need a doctor.”

“I need to know what happens next.”

Arthur looked at the black sedan, then at Daniel’s envelope.

“Then stay,” he said. “You’ve earned the right to hear every word.”
