Daniel’s Voice

Chapter 15 - Daniel’s Voice
The last file was audio.
Noah recognized his father’s voice before the first sentence finished.
“If this reaches Arthur Whitaker, then I’m either dead or out of road.”
Noah gripped the edge of the table.
Arthur stood beside him, head bowed.
Daniel’s recorded voice was older than in Noah’s memories, tired but steady.
“I didn’t steal from you, Arthur. I protected what your son built because I was afraid the people around you had already trained you not to hear the truth. Michael knew Martin Price was stealing. Martin knew Michael would prove it. After the crash, I found the override record. I hid it. Then they came for me.”
A pause.
Paper rustled.
“My son Noah knows nothing. Keep him out of this if you can. But if I’m gone and he brings you the key, believe him before you ask him to prove he belongs in the room.”
Noah broke then.
Not loudly. No dramatic collapse. Just one sharp breath that became tears he could not stop.
Arthur placed a hand near his shoulder but did not touch until Noah nodded.
Then the old man rested his hand gently on the boy’s back.
“I’m sorry,” Arthur whispered.
Daniel’s voice continued.
“He’s a good kid. Proud. Too proud sometimes. Gets that from me. If I failed him, don’t let the last thing I give him be a locked door.”
The audio ended.
