The Offer

Chapter 17 - The Offer

Arthur did not offer Noah money that night.

That was the first thing Noah respected.

Rich men in stories often solved guilt with checks. Arthur seemed to understand that payment would insult what Daniel Reed had carried and what Noah had risked.

Instead, he offered a chair, water, a doctor, and the truth.

Noah accepted the chair last.

They sat in Arthur’s private office above the showroom. Glass walls overlooked the black sedan below. The city glittered beyond. The silver key fob lay on the desk between them, not as bait, not as proof, but as something returned to meaning.

Arthur said, “Your father saved my family’s truth. I failed him.”

Noah stared at the key. “He said you were a good man who trusted bad people.”

Arthur breathed out slowly. “That sounds kinder than I deserve.”

“He wasn’t always kind.”

A faint smile passed between them.

Then Arthur opened a drawer and removed an old photograph: Michael, Daniel, and Arthur standing beside the sedan years ago. Three men smiling before betrayal learned their names.

Arthur turned it toward Noah.

“Your father was part of this company’s best days,” he said. “If you want, when this investigation is over, I would like to tell the world that.”

Noah’s throat tightened.

“He died thinking everyone believed he was a thief.”

“Then we will make sure that is not the last thing said about him.”

Noah looked down.

For the first time since his father’s death, the grief felt like it had somewhere to sit.
