The Key On The Marble Floor / Chapter 8 / 19

The Envelope

Chapter 08 - The Envelope

Arthur opened the sealed envelope on the glass consultation table near the sedan.

No readable writing showed to the guests, only folded pages, a small memory drive, and an old photograph protected in plastic. Arthur handled each item like it might cut him.

Noah stood beside him, one hand still near his sore shoulder.

Evan hovered a few steps away, watched by two showroom security staff who suddenly remembered their actual job.

The photograph came first.

Arthur saw Daniel Reed twelve years younger, standing beside the black sedan with Arthur’s son, Michael. Both men were smiling. Between them, on the hood, lay the same silver key fob.

Arthur’s breath caught.

Michael had died in a crash two months after that photo.

The official investigation said driver error.

Arthur never believed it.

Daniel had been the last mechanic to inspect the car before Michael died. When the data module vanished, suspicion fell on him. Arthur’s grief made him too slow to defend the man. Daniel disappeared, and the company moved on because companies are cruel machines when no one stops them.

Now Daniel’s envelope had returned through his son.

Arthur unfolded the first page.

His face hardened as he read.

Again, the camera would never show text. The words belonged to the characters, not the screen.

“What is it?” Noah asked.

Arthur looked at the memory drive.

“Your father kept proof.”

“Of what?”

Arthur’s eyes moved to the black sedan.

“Of what happened to my son.”

Evan made a small sound.

Not guilt, exactly.

Recognition.

Arthur heard it.

He turned slowly.

“What do you know?”

May you like

Evan’s fake smile was gone.

For the first time, he looked like the floor beneath him might open.
