The Car In The Center

Chapter 03 - The Car In The Center
The black sedan in the center of the showroom was not the newest model.
That confused guests who cared about status more than history. It had been polished until the lights slid over its curves like water, but the design was older, heavier, elegant in a way modern luxury often tried and failed to imitate. The hood line was long. The windows dark. The chrome subtle. The car seemed less displayed than guarded.
Noah recognized it from a photograph.
His father kept that photograph inside a toolbox. Same car. Same shape. Same custom silver fob lying on the hood in the picture beside a younger man with gray hair and a broad smile.
Arthur Whitaker.
Noah did not know why his father had the photo. He only knew the car had been part of the final instructions.
Evan noticed Noah staring.
“That vehicle is invitation-only,” the manager said.
Noah frowned. “It’s a car.”
“It is a private heritage asset.”
“It has a key.”
Evan’s eyes dropped to Noah’s hand.
This time the fear in his face lasted longer.
“What did you say?”
Noah stepped back. “Nothing.”
Evan leaned in, voice lower. “Who gave you that?”
“My father.”
“Who is your father?”
Noah did not answer.
Behind them, the wealthy guests watched with growing curiosity. A man in a blue suit raised his phone, then lowered it when Evan glared. A woman near the velvet rope whispered, “Is this part of the event?”
No.
But it had become the only honest thing in the room.
Noah turned toward the front glass entrance again, searching for anyone older, kinder, powerful enough to stop what was building.
Evan reached for his shoulder.
Noah flinched.
That flinch gave Evan exactly what he wanted: proof the boy could be made to look guilty.
“Security,” Evan snapped, though no guard had stepped forward yet. “Get him away from the vehicle.”
Noah clutched the key fob tighter.
“I didn’t steal it.”
Evan’s fake smile returned, aimed at the guests.
“Of course not,” he said loudly. “We’ll sort out where you found it.”
Found.
The word was poison.
Noah felt anger heat through the fear.
“My father gave it to me.”
May you like
Evan’s hand clamped on his shoulder.
Then he shoved.
