The Marriage Returns to the Record

Chapter 13 - The Marriage Returns to the Record
A court restored Noah and Elena’s marriage registration.
The judge asked whether they wanted a public ceremony to reaffirm it.
They declined.
Their marriage had never needed a ballroom to become real.
They returned to the small courthouse where they first exchanged vows.
The original judge, now retired, met them on the steps.
She had kept a handwritten note from the ceremony because Elena’s joy reminded her of her own daughter.
Noah and Elena took one photograph.
No press attended.
Daniel waited in the car because Noah had invited him but wanted the moment private.
Elena chose to keep the surname Cruz professionally.
Legally, she used Elena Cruz-Ashford.
No family name would erase the one she carried into the marriage.
Noah removed Ashford from several public business titles but kept it personally.
“You do not have to abandon a name to reject what people did with it,” Elena told him.

The restored record became part of the criminal archive.
The marriage itself remained theirs.
