The Empty Culinary School

Chapter 06 - The Empty Culinary School

State police entered the abandoned school with medical responders.

The dining hall remained set with dusty tables. Shelves held unused lunch trays still wrapped in plastic.

Invoices claimed those trays had been delivered to public schools.

In the basement, investigators found Arthur Price.

He was alive, frightened, and heavily medicated, but recognized Daniel.

Arthur had notarized Noah and Elena’s marriage documents and the original will.

After the yacht fire, Victor brought him to Briar Glen under a temporary guardianship order.

Arthur refused to sign a statement denying the marriage.

The order became permanent.

Three weeks earlier, he learned Elena was pregnant.

He began hiding copies of the ledger inside food cartons.

The morning of the breakfast-hall confrontation, Victor moved him to the culinary school.

A nurse named Rachel Stone delayed the next transfer by activating the service bell.

She had recognized the camera symbol from Noah’s instructions.

Arthur handed Ortiz a brass locker key.

The original Hearth ledgers sat inside the old teaching kitchen.

They showed millions of meals reported but never served.

Food purchased for children and employees had been rerouted to private events.

Hotel workers paid reduced prices for staff meals, but the same meals were billed again to the charity at full cost.

Victoria’s foundation profited twice.

Arthur also carried a photograph of Noah taken six weeks earlier.

Noah stood outside a private coastal clinic wearing a patient bracelet.

Daniel stared at it.

“My brother is alive.”

Arthur nodded.

“The yacht fire was meant to erase him, not kill him.”

Noah survived with a head injury.

Victor’s private ambulance reached him before public rescuers.

He had been kept under another name ever since.

Victoria told him Elena accepted a settlement and left the country.

Noah had spent eight months believing his wife chose money over him.
