Kneel Before the Chairwoman

Chapter 01 - Kneel Before the Chairwoman

The slap landed beneath the chandeliers of Royce Hall.

Amelia Sterling’s head turned with the force of it. A thin red mark appeared across her cheek as the orchestra stopped and nearly three hundred guests fell silent.

Her husband, Ethan Cole, stood in front of her wearing a black tuxedo and the expression of a man certain the room belonged to him.

“Kneel,” he said.

Amelia steadied herself against the marble floor but did not obey.

Behind Ethan stood Helena Royce, the silver-haired chairwoman of Royce Meridian Group. She wore a midnight-blue gown and held an open velvet ring box in one hand.

Inside rested an antique sapphire signet ring engraved with a silver hawk.

Helena’s daughter, Celeste, watched from beside the staircase in a pale-gold dress. Her hand covered her mouth, but the satisfaction in her eyes arrived before the performance of shock.

Helena lifted the box.

“This ring disappeared from my private vault this afternoon. It was found inside your handbag.”

Ethan pointed toward the floor.

“You entered my employer’s home, stole a family heirloom, and embarrassed me in front of the entire board. Apologize.”

Amelia looked at the ring.

Then at Helena.

“That ring was never yours.”

Guests murmured.

Ethan’s face darkened.

“You are a translator living because of my income. Do not pretend you understand this family.”

Amelia finally looked at him.

For four years, Ethan had described Royce Meridian’s mansion, aircraft, hotels, and investment funds as proof that he had escaped ordinary life through talent.

He never asked why Amelia smiled whenever he called Helena the owner.

Helena removed the ring from the box.

“My husband gave this to me when I became chairwoman.”

“No,” Amelia said. “My mother lent it to you when she appointed you temporary steward.”

Helena went still.

Celeste dropped her hand.

Ethan laughed.

“Your mother taught piano.”

“That is what she chose to do after leaving the board.”

Amelia rose.

She picked up her black handbag and withdrew a second object: an older ring with the same silver hawk, but with a narrow emerald line beneath the sapphire.

Helena’s ring was a ceremonial copy.

Amelia held the master ring.

She pressed the emerald line twice.

A soft tone sounded through the ballroom.

Every electronic lock in Royce Hall changed from white to amber.

The wall screens turned on.

One sentence appeared:

STERLING SOVEREIGN TRUST — BENEFICIARY AUTHORITY VERIFIED.

Ethan stared at the name.

Amelia slipped the ring onto her finger.

“You wanted me to kneel before your boss,” she said. “You never realized she was managing what belonged to me.”
